The purpose of the Deacons is to cooperate with the Pastor and the Board of Elders in ministering to the needs and well being of the Church and community.
The duties and responsibilities of the board is to care for the poor, sick, sorrowing, indifferent and the stranger. Invite visitors to the Church and visit prospective and new members. Assist in administering communion. Work with the church clerk in making a periodic survey of the Church roll and submit necessary revisions, including granting letters of transfer. Hold monthly and special called meetings at a time set by members and report activities at quarterly business meetings. Assume the role of “Deacon of the Week” and assist the Pastor in visitation on a rotating schedule. Provide a channel of communication between the Pastor and the congregation and counsel the Pastor with respect to the fulfillment of the duties and responsibilities of his/her office. Work with the Pastor and committees in the Church, define and clarify the basic requirements for Church membership, offering training for adults as well as confirmation for children. Develop, mail and tabulate results of the three-year Pastoral survey and provide results to the Pastor and congregation. In conjunction with the Board of Elders, conduct a yearly evaluation session with the Pastor for the purpose of giving and receiving feedback concerning the Pastor’s performance and the overall well-being of the Church. Input from the congregation shall be solicited in advance. A written copy of the evaluation shall be provided to the Pastor and board of Elders, and its contents shall be presented at next quarterly business meeting. Submit to the Stewardship Committee a recommendation for the Pastor’s salary.
